Masonry - Tradition and Future

Masonry is a versatile and fascinating traditional building material. Innovations in the material properties as well as the development of reserves in the design guarantee a successful existence of this construction technique in competition with other building materials or in interaction with these. Besides, modern masonry must meet the static requirements and the today's demands with regard to thermal, acoustic and fire protection – this presents a challenge for the planner.

Jäger Consulting Engineers Ltd. has a special relationship to masonry and have worked intensively in research and practice with this type of construction for 25 years. Professor Jäger has a directly influences to design and measurement of masonry on national and European standardization bodies and expert committees. He is the editor of the annual reference book "Mauerwerk Kalender" (Masonry Calender) and chief editor of the now bilingual magazine "Mauerwerk- European Journal of Masonry".

The thereby accumulated knowledge from research and standardization can be employed profitably in ongoing projects as well as specific problems. For example, it was possible to work already from 1993 at the so-called 'partial safety concept' for the construction of the Frauenkirche Dresden, Church of Our Lady, long before this influenced the European standardization process and it has been introduced throughout Europe under the Euro Code 6 approximately twenty years later.
